Real-World Impact

This project was born from a desire to move beyond abstract conceptualizing the common practice of creating polished interfaces for problems that never face the reality of development. Food ID represents a commitment to functional, full-cycle product design, taking a genuine user problem from initial ideation to a live store release

In markets like the EU, standards such as Nutri-Score provide instant clarity on food quality, but the Ukrainian market currently lacks a unified labeling standard. Manufacturers often hide critical ingredients in small, unreadable text, making it a struggle for consumers to know what they are actually buying.

Food ID acts as a digital mediator by connecting to the OpenFoodFacts database. It transforms chaotic labels into clear, color-coded cards, allowing users to make informed nutritional decisions in just 2–3 seconds.

Design Engineering Approach

To ensure a high-quality experience, the app was built using React Native for both iOS and Android platforms. This allowed for a Design Engineering approach where the interface was polished directly in the code, ensuring that the final product felt fluid and responsive on actual devices.

Working directly within the code repository enabled real-time adjustments to typography, spacing, and interactive states. By implementing animations and refining UI components directly, I ensured that every pixel served the user experience in a functional, live environment

While traditional labels provide data per 100g, Food ID automatically recalculates nutrition for the entire package. This provides users with instant transparency regarding their actual intake without the need for manual math, making healthy choices easier at the checkout.

Accessibility was a central pillar of the design, specifically addressing the struggle of reading tiny print on reflective packaging. By utilizing large typography and high-contrast visuals, we made product information accessible to users with visual impairments, turning the smartphone into a digital shopping assistant.
